How to download your bank statement
Step-by-step guides for the main UK banks, taken from each bank's own help pages. Most banks give you a PDF. If you want the figures in a spreadsheet, you can then convert the PDF privately in your browser.
Choose your bank
| Bank | How far back online | Formats the bank describes |
|---|---|---|
| Lloyds | App at least 10 years; online 7 years | |
| Barclays | From July 2013 | |
| HSBC | Up to 6 years | |
| NatWest | Up to 7 years | |
| Nationwide | 36 months | |
| Santander | 7 years (paper-free) | PDF; transaction download also described |
| Monzo | Choose any date range | PDF, CSV or QIF |
| Tide | Custom range up to 6 months per statement | PDF; CSV export of transactions |
Halifax uses the same steps as Lloyds; see the Lloyds guide.
The general steps
At almost every bank the route is the same: log in to the app or online banking, open the account, find a menu called Statements or Documents, choose the month or date range, and save the PDF. The differences are in where the menu sits and how far back you can go, which is why each bank has its own guide.
PDF or spreadsheet?
If someone asks you for a bank statement, they will often want the bank's PDF rather than a spreadsheet; check what format they accept. For budgeting, bookkeeping or analysing transactions, CSV or Excel is usually easier to work with. Monzo and Tide offer CSV directly. Santander also describes downloading transactions in spreadsheet formats on an older help page.
Turning a PDF statement into a spreadsheet
Our statement converter turns a PDF bank statement into an Excel file, and the PDF to CSV converter gives you a CSV file. Your statement is read inside your own browser and is never uploaded. The converter checks that the running balance adds up and highlights rows that need a second look.
Questions people ask
Can I get a statement from further back than the bank shows online?
Each guide gives the bank's own online limit. For anything older, ask your bank. Where banks mention paper copies, they say these take several working days to arrive (for example up to ten working days at Lloyds).
Is a downloaded statement accepted as proof?
Many organisations accept a downloaded PDF. Monzo and NatWest say their downloaded statements can be used as proof, but always check with the organisation asking for it.
Can I convert a password-protected statement?
No. Our converter cannot open password-protected PDFs, or scanned and photographed statements.
Steps are taken from each bank's own help pages, checked 24th September 2026. Banks change their apps and websites, so the wording on your screen may differ slightly. Statement to Excel is not connected with any bank.
